The December holiday season is a festive time, with gatherings and reunions often conducted in quick succession. With the rush of activity and preparations, it’s possible to overlook some situations or items that are potential fire hazards. To prevent turning your holiday celebration into a disaster, follow these tips compiled by ServiceMaster by Reed. Have a safe and happy holiday!
General Safety
- Inspect fire and smoke alarms before the gatherings, and replace batteries at least once a year.
- Remind smokers to smoke outdoors.
- Keep matches and utility lighters in a safe storage area away from children's reach.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Communicate your fire escape plan to your family and guests.
Cooking Safety
Home structure fires caused by cooking peak during the holidays. Here’s how to keep your loved ones safe:
- Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen at all times.
- Don't cook when you feel sleepy or have taken alcohol.
- Use timers when cooking multiple dishes.
- Keep flammable items away from any heat source.
- Avoid wearing loose or dangling clothing.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the cooking area.
- Keep the floor clear of any tripping hazards.
- Take extra care when handling hot food or liquids.
- Do not pour water on a grease fire! Slowly slide the lid and turn off the stove. Wait until the pan has cooled before removing the lid.
- Use baking soda as an alternative to putting out a grease fire. Only use a Class K fire extinguisher as a final option.
- For oven fires, keep the oven door closed and turn off the heat.
Decoration Safety
- Choose decorations labeled as fire-resistant or fire-retardant by the manufacturer.
- If possible, do not use lit candles as decoration. Use battery-operated LED candles as an alternative.
- Keep any open flames away from decorations and other flammable objects.
- Use lights as recommended by the manufacturer. Do not use indoor lights outside.
- Check lights for broken cords and loose bulbs. Use clips instead of nails when hanging lights to prevent cord damage.
- Keep decorations away from entrances and exits.
